the ups & downs fanzine

"The Ups & Downs" was a fanzine for Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time. It was published several times each year from 1992 until 1999 and sent to Duffy fans all around the world from Ohio, USA. The mastermind behind it all was Stan Hocevar (pronounced "hoe say var"), who invested a lot of his time and effort in this project. It was a true labour of love and before the dawning of the age of cyberspace the definitive source of all Duffy-related information. Stan had the full support of all members of the Duffy family and each issue had contributions from Stephen and/or Nick and one even has a letter from Norma. It also became the medium through which Duffy fans exchanged albums, found pen pals and, allegedly, in some cases even love.

Stan stopped making the fanzine in 1999. The increasing number of websites, the use of email and cyberspace in general meant that news had already reached the duffy community long before the fanzine had been finalised and published. Nevertheless we deeply regret that decision everytime we browse through the issues! They were a great read and where else can you find fan art and cartoons? Stan always made a point that "The Ups & Downs" should be made available to as many people as possible, asking recipients to photocopy and distribute them further. So here they are now, digitalised and ready for you to take a trip down memory lane. Enjoy!
