Stephen Duffy - Because We Love You (1986)
Irrevocable decisions were made on Ian Fleming's Jamaican lawn, listening to Nick Drake with
The Dream Academy. Not just changing of titles of already recorded albums, but also the way forward.
Meanwhile there was business still to be done and a second album to be released. It was a
hastily assembled affair, though not as hasty as The Ups and Downs. There were to be no hit singles,
not even close, there was to be no press adoration, although that would come for later albums.
All in all it was a dry time for the hopes and aspirations for a 25 year old who had been on
Top of the Pops... twice!
The album had a budget and if there was a budget for horns it was going to be spent.
Stephen had learned the art of noise and production and set about this album without the confidence
but with the skill. The follow up single to Icing on the Cake was Wednesday Jones, "Oh no it bloody isn't"
was the response and the "unfinished sounding" Unkiss that Kiss was chosen instead.
I Love You was doomed to failure on both occasions, again despite marketing that gave it a
good chance, posters, remixes and 10" limited editions all failed singularly to hit the spot.
There was an atrocious performance on The Tube, Valentine's day 1986 that centred on I Love You
and the gorgeous (on the album at least) Sunday Supplement. It sounded like the band had just met
for the first, and last time. One final single, Something Special escaped and then phase one
of world domination was done and dusted with everything achieved as planned... except the world
or domination of any kind.
Stephen retreated to the two most diverse projects he could have mustered, to be read
about elsewhere, Dr.Calculus m.d.m.a and The Lilac Time, one was to be the enduring dream the
other a snapshot in time.
Essential listen: Now I know I have a thing about b-sides, however the 12" of
Something Special is indeed just that, on the flipside at least. The two tracks Cocksure,
the original title track of the album, and The Disenchanted are worth the entrance price alone.
Essential buy: Like Icing on the Cake there is a very nice limited pink sleeved remix of
I Love You (TEN9113), which would set you back £ 30 to £ 40, however I would plump
for the rather nice Unkiss that Kiss 7" gatefold double pack (TIND4), which has nice remixes
of Holes in my Shoes and the perennial Love's Duet. Get one with the rather groovy HEY! sticker
on it for completeness and it should be yours for about £ 3.
